The Kalka-Shimla Railroad is a trip through more than a century of history, not merely a train ride. This narrow-gauge wonder was built between 1898 and 1903 in response to the growing demand for a reliable connection to the plains following Shimla's designation as the British summer capital in 1864. The route, which is about 96 km long, passes through 969 bridges, 103 tunnels, and some of the most breathtaking vistas the lower Himalayas have to offer. This cherished 'toy train' still chugs along today, enchanting passengers with its vintage charm. It has a rightful place on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to its engineering prowess and cultural value.

Kufri Where the Himalayas Whisper Peace.

Kufri is a quaint hill station nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, just 20 kilometers from Shimla and at an elevation of about 2,510 meters. It is a preferred getaway for tourists looking for tranquility and scenic beauty because of its tranquil settings and expansive mountain views. It's interesting to note that this peaceful area was formerly a part of the Kingdom of Nepal before the Sugauli Treaty gave it to the British. Before the British discovered Kufri in 1819, it was mainly unknown. Shimla and its surrounding regions were later developed as summer resorts. That same vintage charm still.

- Location: Himachal Pradesh 171012, Kufri, Shimla

Tara Devi: Where Faith Meets the Mountains.

Situated at an elevation of around 1,851 meters on a wooded hill, Tara Devi Temple provides one of Shimla's most serene spiritual retreats. Encircled by towering deodar and pine trees that create a serene, almost contemplative ambiance, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Tara, a venerated manifestation of Goddess Durga, and offers views of expansive valleys and mountain ranges. It's a simple detour from the typical tourist route, situated along the Shimla-Kalka Highway around 11 km from Shimla's city center. Beyond its religious significance, Tara Devi is a place to just calm down, take in the quiet, breathe in the mountain air, and take in views that seem far apart from the daily hustle and bustle of the town.

Chail Wildlife Sanctuary.

Chail, a peaceful hill village with a distinct charm, is located around 52 kilometers from Shimla and off the typical tourist path. Known for its magnificent Chail Palace, which was constructed in 1891, this location is worth spending a few leisurely days there rather than just visiting for the day. Despite the bad, uneven road (which may have improved since), a drive up to the nearby Kali Tibba Temple, which is only 7 km distant, proved to be a highlight of our fall visit in 2018. Every bump along the route was well worth it for the vista at the summit.

- Timings: Open 24 hours (hill town); Chail Palace grounds ~9 AM – 6 PM
- Location: Chail, Solan District, Himachal Pradesh 173217

- Distance from Shimla Bus Stand: Approx. 46 km (1.5–2 hrs drive)
Viceregal Lodge

Perched atop Observatory Hill, Shimla's second-highest point, Viceregal Lodge stands as one of the region's most striking architectural landmarks. Built in 1888 as the summer residence of the British Viceroy, this grand Mock-Tudor mansion was constructed from local gray sandstone and blue limestone, surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. It witnessed pivotal moments in Indian history, including Gandhi's 1922 visit and the 1945 Shimla Conference that shaped the path to independence. Today, part of the Institute of Advanced Studies, only select staterooms are open for a brief guided tour. Beyond the history, the panoramic valley views from the hilltop alone make the visit worthwhile.
